ASLA & NPS-RTCA Partnership

The ASLA AK Chapter Board maintains a relationship with the National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program Alaska Region, in support of the national partnership between the ASLA and NPS. ASLA AK Chapter membership is invited to assist community leaders and NPS-RTCA to continue to advance projects in Alaska awarded assistance by NPS-RTCA. The projects are community-led efforts that include opportunities for Landscape Architects to offer input and expertise in a variety of ways. Anyone interested in participating is asked to contact Paul Clark at NPS-RTCA.

Douglas Fruiting Forest Master Plan

Alaska Chapter ASLA members in Juneau have partnered with the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) Parks and Recreation Department, the Soil Conservation District, and the Douglas Community Garden group to convert a small, underused park on Douglas Island to a Fruiting Forest.

Currently, the park looks and feels like the extension of neighboring private lawns. Alaska Chapter ASLA members assisted in development of the master plan that includes walking paths, a sitting area and children’s play area, timber beds for a variety of berry bushes, fruiting trees, edible gardens with rhubarb, garlic, potatoes, herbs and other low maintenance and hardy edibles.  The community will be welcome to plant, harvest and care for the fruiting forest while CBJ Parks and Recreation Department maintains the park in partnership with the Douglas Community Garden.  Ideally, this project will serve as a prototype for repeating in other underutilized neighborhood park spaces. Public outreach and donor solicitation will continue throughout the winter and construction will begin in early spring 2015.

Student Outreach Program

The Alaska Chapter ASLA Student Outreach Program Committee has had great success working with students in the past and wants to continue doing this work in our many communities with our membership. Thank you to Corvus Design for the unique opportunity to celebrate their firm anniversary with a fundraiser benefiting the Alaska Chapter Student Outreach Program efforts. The fundraiser was extremely successful and the money is being set aside for the specific use of furthering Student Outreach across the State.

This is a fantastic program where local landscape architects are volunteering time to work with students at all age levels on meaningful projects throughout our communities. The ultimate goal is to have the students design and build one of their designs; whether it is for their school, at a nearby park or in a public space. Please help us make that a reality!! For more information on the student outreach program please have a look at the Program booklet:

Thank you to Corvus Design, Exerplay, Gametime, Northwest Playground Equipment, Northwest Landscape, and Alaska Enviroscape for their contributions towards student outreach!

The ASLA Alaska Chapter Website

We are the Alaska Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (www.asla.org).

As a small organization, we rely upon the time and contributions of our membership and we are lucky that we are composed of a group of dedicated people. This website is a crucial next step for our chapter in making much of what we have done (and do) more readily available, and also making it easier and more efficient to move ahead with new initiatives. Please provide feedback using the 'contact' icon in the upper right corner.
